How to thoroughly clean a non-removable sofa in a natural way? What to avoid for a truly effective and green cleaning?

In fabric, eco-leather, microfiber, silk or alcantara, when buying your sofa, the undisputed king of the living room, you considered issues of every order and degree: the width, the color, the material. As a piece of furniture it had to be flawless, but there is a but: you took it with a non-removable cover. Which means not having considered the grain that can result when a beautiful stain is placed on that sofa. How then to clean a sofa with a non-removable cover?

If those who can "undress" allow a quick washing in the washing machine, the sofas (and armchairs) with non-removable covers have on their side the fact that they cost less, but are much more delicate and need much more attention and care, especially if there are hordes of mucolytic children aged 6 and under in the house. In this case, it would be better to cover at least the sessions with a scarf, a sofa cover or even cover it and see you on the sofa for the next decade.

In all other cases, it is not that hard and it is good to know that, however, even a sofa that cannot be unlined can be washed (and God forbid) with a little care and little secrets.

What is periodically needed is first of all one ordinary cleaning: a good method is to vacuum the fabrics at least once a week and between the cracks where barely visible dirt often accumulates and inspect a bit of everything in order to avoid atavistic stains that are then difficult to remove.

Cleaning starts ... at the time of purchase

The maintenance of the sofa, especially in the long term, is a matter that you should not underestimate the moment you buy it. Those in fabric ensure ease of washing, let's face it especially if they are removable, but they can certainly accumulate more mites and bacteria, absorb odors or sweat and require more frequent washing. The "real leather" is a very little green solution, while the eco-leather - with a lower environmental impact - is on average much cheaper than real leather and also more practical, but it can still be subject to abrasions or cuts. At the time of purchase, therefore, try to evaluate what use you will make of it.

To brush!

Before the passage of the vacuum cleaner or the handheld vacuum cleaner, go to brush! A soft one for clothes, for example, will be useful for removing hair, dog and cat hair and dirt that can settle over time and create a gray patina. Remember every corner, including armrests and headrests, and also dust the wooden or metal parts, with the help of a damp cloth.

The labels

The first rule before washing is always: read the labels. In fact, the manufacturers themselves indicate the composition of the fabric (nylon, polyester, fiber) and give useful information ("dry cleaning only", "water-based products" ...). Always, however, to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is good to use any product on a small hidden part of the sofa and then, in the absence of "reactions", proceed.

Neutral detergent

The ideal is to use a neutral organic detergent, even hand soap is fine as well as ecological dish detergent. Be careful not to use products that foam. Just treat the sofa with the detergent and a damp and well-wrung cloth, insisting on the stained areas to remove the halos.

Vinegar

Create a liquid solution at home with half a liter of water, a cup of vinegar and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Moisten a clean cloth with the solution and wipe the entire sofa: in this way you will be able to cleanse and disinfect at the same time with the pleasant scent of lavender.

Baking soda or corn starch

Sofas with non-removable covers (as well as rugs or carpets) can be sprinkled with baking soda or corn starch, which must be left to act for a few hours, especially on areas where there are stains. Then beat everything with a carpet beater and remove any residues with a vacuum cleaner.

Vapor

First try to remove the dust with the vacuum cleaner with the spout everywhere, even between the cracks, between the cushions and the armrests and between the cushions themselves, then work with the steam jet in the same way. The steam allows you to sanitize and eliminate mites and dirt residues in a completely natural way.

And the faux leather?

The leather sofa deserves a separate discussion: sometimes just one damp microfiber cloth to remove dust and impurities. But even in this case it can be useful to prepare a couple of liters of lukewarm water with some bicarbonate, dip a soft cloth in it and rub the sofa. Then rinse and go over all corners. In the case of the leather sofa they are fine too vinegar o Marseille soap, while to keep it always young and shiny use a little of your cleansing milk for the face. With its denser consistency it can also be poured directly on stains and then removed with a cloth.

Things to avoid to keep the sofa clean

  • Remember not to use a cloth that is too wet on the sofa, especially the fabric one, because even the water could leave marks
  • Do not use aggressive products such as bleach and chemical solvents
  • Avoid eating on the sofa and sitting in dirty clothing. Be careful if you have any open wounds: children, for example, could easily leave bloodstains from their "ox"
