Holland is the only country in the world without stray dogs or dogs locked in kennels

Thanks to the joint work of administrations, veterinarians and animal welfare associations, the Netherlands has defeated stray animals quickly and effectively

Fighting the stray dogs it seems an impossible undertaking, if we consider 200 million stray dogs globally. L'Holland however, he did it and is the first country in the world to no longer have dogs locked up in kennels or abandoned on the street.

Solving the problem required a great deal of commitment and work on several fronts involving associations, veterinarians and administrations.

Efforts were focused on three key points: the sterilization of strays, laws on animal welfare and incentives for adoptions.

The first aspect, the sterilization, it is essential to prevent stray animals from multiplying excessively. The Netherlands has therefore implemented a rigorous program that made it possible in a few months to sterilize over 75% of stray dogs, which were then subjected to vaccinations and veterinary checks.

The second step in defeating stray dogs was to approve laws on animal welfareand that they envisaged more severe penalties for those who did not guarantee a quality life for animals, including stray ones, with penalties of up to 16 thousand euros and imprisonment of up to three years for offenders.

Finally, to increase dog adoptions in kennels, they have been initiated awareness campaigns and initiatives to discourage the purchase of dogs from farms which have included, among other things, the increase in taxes on the purchase and sale of animals in the shop.

In Argentina, less taxes for those who adopt an abandoned dog

Today, stray dogs in the Netherlands are a solved problem and 11 million dogs were rescued from the street. 90% of Dutch people now share their days with a happy, grateful and wagging four-legged friend.
