Where there was an abandoned railway now there is ... a wonderful garden zen immersed in silence in the heart of the Big Apple. She was already beautiful like this but now the New Yorker Highline is finally ready. The third phase of redevelopment was also completed, giving inhabitants and tourists a new place to spend a few moments of relaxation surrounded by greenery in the Meatpacking District.
Located in western Manhattan, the atmospheric park born on the ruins of an old elevated station initially intended for the transport of meat, it was completed.
The inauguration of the third part took place last Saturday, with a colorful ceremony held near its southern part, along West 31st Street, in the presence of the founders of Friends of the High Line, Joshua David and Robert Hammond, thanks to whom the old abandoned ruin has returned to life.
It runs from the former northern terminus of the High Line between West 30th Street and 10th Avenue, to 12th Avenue, overlooking the Hudson River, and with a new entrance on West 34th Street opposite the Javits Center. The latter has a peculiarity: it is the only one in the whole park that does not have high access, but at street level.
The first part of the High Line was opened in 2009, while the second was completed in 2011. Now, with the third just built, the park has a total of 2,3 kilometers of greenery and relaxation areas overlooking the city. Today, when the works are completed, the park starts from Gansevoort Street, crosses Meatpacking and goes up to 34th, between 10th and 12th Avenues.
Inside they are present numerous plant species, some of which change according to the season. New pedestrian and cycle paths have been traced, marked by various colored signs, designed for both adults and children.
Among the novelties just inaugurated also the Pershing Square Beams. In an enclosed area near 11th Avenue, an old concrete bridge was removed to showcase the original old High Line beams, now coated in silicone and placed in a children's play area.
The park is open daily and hosts Events such as concerts, yoga classes, and children's activities.
