A new study reveals that vitamin D can reduce the effects of Covid-19: taking this vitamin, in fact, would have positive effects on reducing the inflammatory markers of the Coronavirus.

Studies have suggested that vitamin D plays an important role in protecting against viral respiratory infections, and that those with high blood levels of this vitamin have milder symptoms of Covid-19 infection. Now a pilot study conducted at the Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad (in Andhra Pdradesh, India) on some patients affected by Coronavirus shows that an increase in vitamin D levels in the blood significantly reduces inflammatory markers in patients with contraindications.

The study was conducted on 130 patients with mild Covid symptoms. The patients were randomly divided into two groups - one of patients treated with vitamin D (VD) and the other of patients not treated with vitamin D (NVD) - explains Dr. Maheshwar Lakkireddy. - The VD group received massive treatment with vitamin D (a whopping 60.000 U of vitamin for 8/10 days, depending on the BMI of the patients) in addition to the standard treatment. The NVD group received standard treatment only.

Clinical observations on patients belonging to the two groups revealed that vitamin D levels increased fourfold in the VD group, simultaneously with a significant reduction in all markers that signal inflammation. This reduction is negligible in the NVD group, however.

The task force ofIndian Council of Medical Research states that the same risk factors attributed to low levels of vitamin D in the blood are also associated with a higher risk of serious diseases: this could lead to the hypothesis that low levels of vitamin D can lead to contracting severe forms of Coronavirus. However, there is still a need for further investigation of patients in other parts of the world as well.
