High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, but by making simple dietary changes, you can prevent these problems from occurring. There high blood pressure refers to the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels. When this is too high, it can damage the delicate tissues of the arteries; this process can lead to heart attack and stroke. It has been shown that the black tea lowers blood pressure, and relaxes arterial stiffness. Furthermore, according to research, this effect occurs within one hour of consumption.

Researchers studied the effects of black tea on blood pressure in hypertensive patients. For it study, published in the journal Nutrients, 19 patients were given either black tea or a placebo twice a day for eight days. Blood pressure numbers were measured before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after tea consumption. Compared to placebo, thestiffness index decreased after tea consumption.

The arterial stiffness index is a non-invasive method of measuring the stiffness of the arteries. Basically, black tea reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and prevented hypertension from rising after a fat load. In their concluding remarks, the researchers said the findings suggest that the Regular consumption of black tea can be relevant for cardiovascular protection.

Diastolic and systolic pressure: how to understand the values

Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers. There systolic pressure (highest number) is the force with which your heart pumps blood around your body. There diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels. They are both measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). As a general guide:

High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90 mmHg or higher (or 150/90 mmHg or higher if you're over 80). The ideal blood pressure is generally between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg.

Blood pressure readings between 120/80 mmHg and 140/90 mmHg could mean you are a risk of developing high blood pressure. Hypertension usually doesn't have any symptoms, so the only way to find out if you have the condition is to constantly check your blood pressure.
