Almost all tea varieties (such as green tea, white tea, black tea or oolong tea) all come from the same plant: Camellia sinensis. They mainly differ in the way the leaves of the tea plant are processed after harvesting and before drying. In the long run, however, all types of tea will lose their flavor and phytochemicals (substances found naturally in plants), mainly flavonoids, they will begin to degrade. However, dried tea leaves that are kept dry do not deteriorate and, as long as they are stored away from heat, water, light and air, their flavor and phytochemical content can be preserved, too. up to a maximum of two years.

The more fermented and intact the dried leaves, the longer they will last. Of course, there are differences in tea varieties: black is more fermented than green, white and oolong are somewhere in between. The integrity varies according to the state of the tea leaves, i.e. whether they are broken-leaved or powdered. Most of the tea bags commercially available single doses often contain finely chopped tea leaves and powder because they are prepared quickly. Some tea bags contain whole leaves, but they tend to be larger to allow the leaves to expand.

In conclusion, to store tea for 1 to 2 years, put the tea bags or dried leaves in a airtight container immediately after purchase and keep them away from sources of heat or light.
