Why lipstick can be dangerous

Applied on the lips several times a day, the lipstick may not be safe if, as mentioned above, it contains elements that are potentially dangerous for the skin and health in general as small particles of these metals can be ingested involuntarily while, for example, eating. of food. We are therefore talking about lipsticks that contain an overabundance of chromium, aluminum, cadmium and manganese. Chromium is a carcinogen that is linked to the development of stomach tumors; manganese has often been linked to nervous system toxicity.

Sector studies on lipstick

The attention to the presence of heavy metals in lipsticks has led to the realization of several university researches. Studies on this topic have appeared in the American online journal Environmental Health Perspectives: for US researchers, the average use of lipstick during the day corresponds to 24mg of ingested product; a more intense use, related to the repeated use of lipsticks throughout the day, would lead to ingesting up to 87mg per day of potentially dangerous materials.

Europe has also conducted studies in this regard thanks to the work of the Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety. The most recent analyzed the presence of aluminum in various care and cosmetic products, including lipsticks: those that do not exceed a concentration of this element over 14% of the general composition are to be considered safe.

Small tips to use lipstick safely

As we have seen, moderation is also the key when it comes to make-up: applying lipstick twice a day would be ideal. It is possible to adopt other small but important precautions. Buying products made according to European standards is a safety index. At the same time, it is important to keep the lipsticks which, like all cosmetics, have an expiration date shown on the package that should be respected. Keeping them stored in a dry place allows you to preserve their authenticity. It is also necessary to be very careful with the products that are used to make up children, on festive occasions, or with those chosen by pregnant women: it is better to prefer organic cosmetics and made in compliance with high quality standards.
