They were monumental plane trees planted in the second half of the nineteenth century, but this did not prevent them from being demolished. It happened in the park of San Rocco, at the entrance to Serra San Bruno in Calabria, a real havoc that continues to arouse perplexity.

He could not leave indifferent the cutting of some centuries-old trees that were located within the green area in honor of the Saint of Montpellier.

“Yesterday, Sunday, an inspection of the Park of the Church of San Rocco in Serra San Bruno, to ascertain the damage caused by the unmotivated cutting of several monumental plane trees by the parish priest of the Chiesa Matrice. It seems that even the woodcutters in charge have begged the priest to limit himself to a simple pruning of the plants. But the priest was adamant. "Either you cut them or I have them cut by someone else," the priest said. We checked the stumps: they weren't "wet" trees at all, as the priest said, "he writes Francesco Bevilacqua Your Facebook.

The green area is owned by the diocese of Catanzaro-Squillace which apparently 'would have ordered its demolition with the authorization of the Calabria Region'. But from the Department of the Presidency of the Calabria Region with competences in matters of forestry, forestation and soil protection, they let it be known that no authorization has been granted by the Authority in relation to the felling. Or rather, the Department has been consulted, but has not given any go-ahead.

In recent days, the diocese of Catanzaro Squillace had also come out saying that it could not be held responsible for the incident. And the mayor Luigi Tassone?

“The municipality of Serra San Bruno has no responsibility for the cutting of trees in the San Rocco area. No communication went through our administration ”.

In short: the curia is not responsible, the Calabria Region has not issued the authorization, the Municipality is not competent… and therefore, who took the initiative for the killing? The monumental plane trees represent a heritage of artistic and landscape value, but not only. Many Serresi denounced the fact that even specimens in good health would have been cut.

In an instant, a piece of history was swept away that certainly made the park shine and while the controversy to ascertain who is responsible for it has not subsided, the fact remains that the monumental plane trees no longer stand out. Finally, we remind you that since 2013 the old trees are protected by law, how was an oversight of this magnitude possible?

For our part, we are always on the side of the trees.
