Have your food containers become dull and stained? The tricks to make them return to their splendor

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

I rigid plastic containers they represent a valid help in many homes: they are usually designed to go both in the fridge and in the microwave, they can help us take our lunch to the office or university and allow us to keep the leftovers of the day before without waste.

They come in all shapes and colors but, in the long run, they all have the same drawback: they become irremediably opaque, losing their original transparency (or color). This is mainly due to some 'aggressive' substances in the plastic, present in foods such as tomatoes and hot peppers.

So how can we protect our containers from wear and washing? A little washing-up liquid, sugar, ice and sparkling water are enough: dust the bottom of the container with sugar (until it covers the surface), then add the detergent and ice cubes, finally fill the container with sparkling water up to the edge. After a waiting time of about an hour, it is possible to wash the container and the opacity should be gone (if necessary, repeat the whole procedure).

As for the unpleasant halo of grease that often appears in our containers and which is so difficult to eliminate, we can use natural degreasers such as lemon juice: just let a little pure juice act inside the container before washing it with normal dish soap and the halo will disappear effortlessly.

even the sodium bicarbonate can help us make our plastic containers cleaner: you can mix a few tablespoons of powder with a little water to create a thick cream to leave for a few minutes before rinsing. Be careful not to use vinegar to degrease and deodorize plastic containers! Vinegar, in fact, is highly harmful if dispersed in water and contributes to the pollution of the oceans.

However, it is always good to remember: plastic pollutes and even the high quality food containers (which have cost us dear) end up degrading and releasing microplastics in the water we wash them with and in the food they contain by dint of using them. It is therefore better to prefer glass, metal or terracotta containers. A good idea is also to reuse the empty jars of jams and preserves to keep our food in the fridge or pantry: in this way we will avoid creating waste and buying new containers - a saving for our pockets for the benefit of the environment. !
