La Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has compiled a list of hand sanitizers to avoid. To date there are 100 products, considered ineffective or even dangerous for health.

The US agency first warned in June of the existence of hand sanitizers containing it methanol, a substance that occurs naturally during the distillation of alcohol but which manufacturers should take care to remove as it is toxic if absorbed through the skin e potentially fatal if ingested.

Due to the presence of methanol, 75 products were recalled by the producers and withdrawn from store shelves.

Now the FDA is warning of some hand sanitizers on the market that contain insufficient levels of alcohol. The US agency has consequently expanded the list of disinfectants to avoid which has reached 100.

“FDA test results show that some hand sanitizers have relatively low levels of ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, which are active ingredients in hand sanitizer products. The agency urges consumers not to use these ineffective products and has expanded its list to include ineffective hand sanitizers, as well as hand sanitizers that are or could be contaminated with methanol "reads the statement issued on 31 July. .

Almost all of the hand sanitizers listed by the FDA were manufactured in Mexico. The agency has recommended the recall for most products and has also issued warnings to prevent imports into the United States.

The US agency reminds consumers to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose.

If soap and water are not readily available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend consumers use a alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol).
