Gymnastics in pregnancy: it is good for the baby's brain

Even during pregnancy, physical activity is important not only for the mother but also for the baby's brain development.

It is really true that exercising is a healthy habit and it is also pregnant! A new confirmation that gymnastics during pregnancy is good not only for the mother but also for the baby comes from the University of Montreal, Canada.

The researchers looked at two groups of pregnant women in the second trimester of pregnancy. The first group practiced 20 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity 3 times a week, the second group, on the other hand, did not do any sports.

Once all the babies were born, what the researchers discovered was that those delivered by "active" mothers, already between the 8th and 12th day of life, had greater brain activity and therefore faster brain development compared to other children.

The team of scientists came to this conclusion by offering the children a series of sound stimuli while they slept and then evaluating the effect of these on the brain through an electroencephalogram with soft electrodes.

The conclusion was very clear: movement during pregnancy stimulates the baby's intelligence which will immediately be more reactive to certain stimuli.

"We are optimistic that this will encourage women to change their habits, as simple exercise during pregnancy could make a difference for their children's future," said Professor Dave Ellemberg, lead author of the study.

Now all that remains is to deepen the research to understand whether these benefits also extend to other areas of children's development, such as motor or cognitive.
