Il Guerrilla Knitting, a colorful phenomenon of self-production ed beautification of the urban environment, is becoming more and more popular in Cornwall, thanks to the activity of a group of ladies, aged between 49 and 97 years, who are dedicated to sewing at the knitting to realize decorations used to spruce up common spaces which parks and green areas, but also rural and village streets, characterized by the presence, for example, of benches, fences and piers worn by time, which need a colorful feminine touch.
Like Guerrilla Gardening, the Guerrilla Knitting has the purpose of save common spaces from dullness and neglect in which citizens find themselves passing absent-mindedly every day, for example to go to their place of work. The group of women active in Cornwall is currently keen to keep their identity as secret as possible and to ensure thesurprise effect of their missions in search of the right place to show off one of their creations.
This is how in the cold of winter the trunk of a bare tree is wrapped and warmed by one shawl blue, enriched by dozens of brightly colored flowers or that a colony of mice yellow and blue, knitted, it is arranged in single file along a gray and slightly shabby parapet.
The group of Guerrilla Knitters British is coming up with something special for the next Olympics and almost certainly with some of their creations they will create a romantic atmosphere on the occasion of Valentine's Day, a party that in the United Kingdom is dedicated not only to lovers, but also to the rediscovery of family affections and activities dedicated to the little ones of the house, among which the realization of do-it-yourself jobs and small theatrical performances, as well as the recitation of poems stand out.
Their works are increasingly appreciated by the British press, from which they are cited more and more frequently. Their activity is reaching a supranational notoriety thanks to the creation of a Facebook page dedicated to it, which already counts more than 1500 supporters, that animate the bulletin board with their comments of appreciation. Last month they also stood out in New York at a prestigious knitwear show
The women in the group knit during the day, but it is after sunset they come into action, so that their fellow citizens can smile when they wake up and find themselves in front of one of their surprises: pom poms hanging from the branches of trees like small fruits or along the gates, statues decorated with scarves and hats or weird little animals on street corners. Small, large, examples of creativity, a symptom of a newfound desire for a good mood and a desire to do that never dies.
