The availability of this alfalfa genome will help scientists understand the link between the plant's genetic characteristics and its healing properties.

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal, India, sequenced the genome of the guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), a plant known since ancient times for its medical properties and used for centuries both in traditional medicine and in Ayurvedic preparations for the treatment of various medical conditions - such as diabetes and fever; moreover, it also has positive effects in reducing the symptoms of HIV, as well as antioxidant and protective properties against the side effects of cancer chemotherapy treatments.

The availability of this genome will therefore open new avenues for the use of this plant in the medical field. In fact, despite the awareness of its innumerable properties (anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antipyretic, regulator of the immune system ...), scientists still knew too little about this miraculous plant. Furthermore, the discovery, according to experts, could represent the turning point in the use of guduchi for the treatment of patients with Covid-19, in India as in the rest of the world.

It is a plant belonging to the Menispermaceae family (which includes tropical or subtropical plants), indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. It is characterized by a woody stem, with roots that can measure up to a few meters, and by large green heart-shaped leaves.

His Sanskrit name, अमृतलता (amratlata), means'nectar of the gods'. In the manual of traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda, this plant is considered a real elixir of life: it improves digestion, prevents gout, aging and skin problems; it has soothing properties against cough and flu and against stomach problems; strengthens the immune system, improving general health, and reduces swelling and pain in the joints. What is surprising about this miracle plant is the contribution it makes in strengthening brain skills such as memory and concentration, as well as in relieving stress and exhaustion.
