Green spaces in the city reduce the rates of violence

According to a recent study, contact with nature is associated with a stronger sense of society and lower crime rates.

Spend time in the middle of the nature identity it is good for the body and mind as well reduces crime! If so many, in fact, they are the health benefits, including reduced depressive symptoms and lower blood pressure, living in the common green is also synonymous with higher levels of cohesion.

In short, the benefits of constant exposure to nature do not stop with individuals but also extend to the community and to society as a whole. This is supported by a recent study, according to which contact with nature is associated with a stronger sense of society and lower crime rates.

To deepen the investigation, the researchers measured the relationships between individual assessments and community assessments of nature exposure, plus community cohesion and crime rates. They then asked a group of 2 participants from different communities to report on their type of contact with nature, the amount of time spent outdoors and how much greenery they have around their homes. The results were surprising: contact with nature seemed to have a significant effect on promoting community ties and reducing violence and criminal acts.

Even after establishing the influence of other factors, such as socio-economic deprivation, population density and unemployment, the outcome was always the same: green can have a suppressive effect on crime.

What explains this striking effect? “Could it be that green space encourages people to come together and support their communities, so that local crime is discouraged, ”explains Neta Weinstein, a psychologist at Cardiff University and one of the authors of the study.

Greener, therefore, in cities would be necessary not only to give a good lung to spaces already too tormented by all sorts of pollution, but it could also be guarantee for the safety of every single citizen!
