Green public toilets: the urinal that “recycles” the pee to water the plants

Transforming public urinals into real tanks for watering plants. that's how

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Even the orinatoi can be green. And ours too pee-pee can be reused…per water the plants. The extravagant idea is from the young designer Eddie Gandelman who tried to make a usually dirty and anonymous place, the public bathroom, more comfortable and green.

Thus he designed a cylindrical structure, which houses 4 urinals, at the top of which are placed some plants. The latter come just water with our urine, properly treated. The 22-year-old, who studies design at the University of Cincinnati, told his idea to Theatlanticcities.com: “I think urinal in public restrooms is one of the worst things designed. I was looking at my drawings and I thought, 'Hey, it would be great to be able to water the plants with your own pee-pee'". No sooner said than done.

Gandelman went to work and studied the way to transform present squalor into future beauty. "It could work," he assures. The result of his work is called "When Nature calls"Literally" when Nature calls "and is a urinal which filters sodium and uric acid through a three-step process involving activated carbon, limestone and sand. The final product is conveyed directly to the aquatic plants placed on the top of the structure.

His idea immediately went around the world. Many ladies have requested al designer to design a feminine version of the ingenious toilet, which unfortunately does not yet exist. Similarly, the idea does not exist yet except on paper When Nature Calls, but in recent weeks, Gandelman has reportedly been approached by numerous architects looking to integrate his idea into their most recent sustainable building projects. There is not even a prototype but only the idea put on paper.

Recently, Gandelman spoke with an engineer about the possibility of translating the concept into a real product but the main obstacles would be the high costs, but the young man did not give up: "My next step could be to find the right people with the right skills to take my idea to the next level ".

The concept of separating solid waste from liquid waste and treating it for future use is not new. About 135 such toilets are already in use in Sweden, where part of the urine collected and transformed into fertilizer passes to farmers. Same thing in China too.
