Can building development be reconciled with respect for the environment? Cities of the future could be greener thanks to the creation of a biological cement able to absorb the Co2 emissions present in the air due to pollution due to human activities. The new material was developed in Spain and exploits the use of microorganisms.

A group of researchers from the Universidad Politecnica de Catalunya worked on the development of a biocement defined as revolutionary capable of giving space to the presence of microorganisms such as algae, mosses and lichens, considered suitable to act by absorbing excess carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere. The biological cement made in Spain sees its greatest strength in microorganisms.

At the moment the Spanish researchers have been involved in the realization of two different types of biological cement. The first has a pH of 8 and would be suitable for European climatic conditions, while acting effectively on thermoregulation of buildings, as well as contributing to the absorption of Co2. The second type provides an acid pH and would not require excessive maintenance.

Entrambe le typology di biological cement exploit the action of microalgae and other microorganisms in the absorption of carbon dioxide. At the moment the experts are working to improve theaesthetic appearance of both products, in order to obtain biocement with a pleasant color and which may be able to change its tone according to the seasons.
