Collecting clothes that are no longer used to give them to those who really need them is of fundamental importance. The alternative for old clothes is the landfill. Only a part of the fabrics is actually recovered, when it does not become part of the illegal trade in textile waste and the recovery of used clothing outside the rules.

In the United States, a San Francisco, new ones are born smart bins is preferably used for collection of used clothes to donate in beneficence. I am part of a project of the association San Francisco Goodwill, which works to improve the quality of life of all citizens, engaging in the social sphere.

In the Californian metropolis now donate used clothes it will become as convenient as throwing a bottle in the bin collection. The smart bins are ready to reach the condominiums of the city: they will be positioned in special spaces to allow everyone to put inside the clothes to donate to charity without having to organize to leave the house and deliver them to the collection points.

The hope is that in this way the quantity of clothes to be donated to the poorest will increase and that the accumulation of clothing - still usable and almost new - in the landfills. The idea is really useful and smart. Out of laziness, unfortunately, we often tend to throw in the garbage what we no longer use, without too many worries and without thinking that what for us represents a refusal it could turn into a real one treasure for other people.

In San Francisco, clothing and textile material represents the 5% of the volume of waste collected in landfills. Every year, the city's landfills collect tons of clothes, a precious commodity that could be easily reused, especially if in good condition, as is the case with most discarded clothing.

Donors who use the bins by scanning a QR code will be sent an online form for the certification of the donation which will allow, once completed, to receive by e-mail the document certifying the donation made.

A special sensor indicates when the bins are full, so that the San Francisco Goodwill operators can immediately drop by to collect the collected clothes. Each bin was made with locally sourced recycled materials.

During the year, at least 100 Goodwill bins will be placed in homes. The smart bins project will help the metropolis achieve the ambitious Zero Waste target by 2020?
