    The news is reported by the sanctuary itself, which for years has been taking care of animals that need help and have nowhere to go. Despite her size, which could be intimidating at first sight, Yuki was a gentle giant.

    On November 12 the animal during the patrol tours conducted in the sanctuary, the volunteers realized that Yuki had not gone to get his medicine.

    “When we entered his enclosure, we found out he was dead. He left peacefully during the night. Bella, her packmate, seems to be fine even though we know she misses Yuki, ”the Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education and Experience Center wrote in a post on Facebook.

    Even though it was a sudden death, the wolfhound had been sick for some time. She had hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood. Three years ago the vets had confirmed that Yuki didn't have much left to live but thanks to an immune supplement she seemed to be doing better.

    “He lived an incredible and happy 13 years of life. Yuki's legacy reaches all over the world thanks to her personality and her unique size. Many people have seen him and have come to know him as the "terrible wolf" but Yuki taught us all about patience, love and understanding as all animals have unique personalities and set their own boundaries. "

    Yuki became famous two years ago when the Bored Panda website published Yuki's story and photo. From there he also ended up on TV in the “Inside Edition” program in 2019.



    Then the host asked if he was a direwolf, interviewing Shy Wolf staff members. A 2018 DNA test confirmed that Yuki is 87,5% a gray wolf, 8,6% a Siberian husky and 3,9% a German shepherd.

    "The popularity of 'Game of Thrones' has fueled interest in extinct species believed to have lived 1 million to 10.000 years ago," said Shy Wolf in 2019.

    In the HBO series, extinct direwolves are often featured and have been since the first episode aired nearly a decade ago.
