He died without ever having seen the North Pole and probably dreaming of freedom. Farewell to It stinks, the polar bear infamous for being the first to be born in a tropical area. Main attraction of the Singapore Zoo, the animal was euthanized.

Weakened, Inuka had stopped feeding because her health had deteriorated. He had long had ear infections and severe arthritis. On December 26, he had blown out his 27th candle, becoming one of the oldest polar bears raised in captivity.

But according to the veterinarians there was nothing more to be done to alleviate his suffering so a few days ago, he was euthanized despite the fact that associations and citizens had asked to let him die naturally.

Now Inuka is gone and it remains to wonder how much being born and lived in captivity has affected her state of health. He was born in 1990, to Nanook and Sheba, two bears who came from Canada and Germany and his story immediately went around the world.

The main problem is that the zoo managers bragged about the tropical bear, they made it an attraction, like any marketing product. But Inuka was not an object, she was a living being who has been forced to live in an unnatural environment all his life.

In 2004 there was even a suspicion that zoo managers were using hydrogen peroxide to keep the bear's fur white. The animal rights activists had reported a shade of green on the coat, but from the zoo they had replied that it was a growth of algae inside the mantle.

Extreme heat, confined space, subjected to the confusion of visitors and the flashes of photographs. What was the life of Inuka? Probably similar to that of Arturo, the saddest bear in the world, the polar bear Pizza in the Chinese shopping center and Taps, the Capuchin bear killed while trying to escape from the captivity in which he was born and probably many others.

All examples that show how animal welfare is being sidelined in favor of profit. Inuka has now stopped suffering, but without tasting the taste of freedom. The only good news in this whole story is that the Singapore Zoo has announced that its cage will remain empty and therefore there will be no polar bear in its place. And we hope so.
