A team of Australian researchers imagines a world devoid of fossil fuels and pollutants, completely sustainable. Is this an actually possible future or a scientists' dream?

Is it possible a world completely powered by renewable energy, free from the (polluting) slavery of fossil fuels? To many it might seem like a fantasy, but a team of scientists has shown how this chimera is theoretically possible - as long as we learn to stock up globally.

The ambitious study, led by Professor James Ward of the University of South Australia, explains how a 100% renewable future is really possible, with some necessary changes in the way we understand the energy resource and consume it. The first step towards complete energy sustainability is represented by a significant 'electrification', or the transition (which, fortunately, is already taking place) to electricity.

First of all, we need to reduce the enormous energy demand of the various nations of the world, if we want the planet not to be covered in the coming years by territories destined for the planting of biomass (not very sustainable from an environmental point of view) sufficient to meet the current demands of society. global - explains Professor Ward. - Furthermore, our study shows that we must radically switch to electricity in more developed countries, where electricity could cover 75% of society's final needs. There will be a need to adopt technology that allows electricity to be used to convert gases from the atmosphere into fuel.

We really hope that the approach proposed in our study will demonstrate that a sustainable future is possible. Furthermore, our aim is to guide national governments to plan their energy consumption within a more sustainable perspective and attentive to the exploitation of renewable sources. Despite this, however, much of the success of this green ideal will depend on the development of technology, on the efficiency of the electrification process, on the production of innovative chemical fuels. Probably, to achieve full energy sustainability, it will also be necessary to use part of the areas currently covered by forests.
