Angelo didn't make it. The brave shepherd dog, who has become a symbol of the devastating fires broke out in Sardinia at the end of July, he died a few hours ago. The animal had served as a shield to his sheep, remaining motionless despite the very high flames, but he paid for his great courage with his life. To find him in Tresnuraghes (in the province of Oristano), near a wall surrounded by fires, was a veterinarian who hoped until the last for a happy ending. But, unfortunately, for the four-legged hero there was nothing to do.
The sad announcement came from the Duemari veterinary clinic in Oristano that was taking care of him, trying to alleviate the atrocious suffering caused by the burns spread all over his body.
"Angelo is very ill, his body is failing" the staff of the veterinary clinic had announced on Facebook yesterday, publishing photos of the dog visibly suffering.

Soon after came the terrible news. "He no longer suffers," the vets write and in a short time the clinic page was flooded with goodbye messages, full of affection, from thousands of people who had cheered for him to the last.

After learning about the dramatic story of Angelo, some citizens have decided to donate drugs to the clinic for the treatment of the shepherd dog.
Although Angelo can no longer use these products, we thank you - the veterinarians comment - We will still make good use of them with dogs and cats and wild animals. They are all Angels.
Angelo is only one of the many animals burned alive by the flames that have struck Sardinia and whose death and suffering have faded into the background. He could very well have escaped and saved himself, but he did not want to abandon his sheep, offering us all a great lesson in courage and selflessness. Have a good trip, sweet Angelo!
