Good beings with the Earth begins with the table

It is now a fact that sustainability and attention to the environment must also pass through our food and consumer choices. Just think of the hundreds of kilometers that the foods that we find ourselves consuming every day on our tables have to travel to reach us, accompanied by the relative and huge polluting emissions, or how intensive farming is considered one of the sources of greater gas production. greenhouse of our planet, so much so that some experts say that a steak would pollute more than a car.

That sustainability andattention to the environment they must also pass through ours food choices and of consumers is now a fact. Just think of the hundreds of kilometers that the foods that we find ourselves consuming every day on our tables must travel to reach us, accompanied by the relative and enormous Polluting emissions, or how the intensive breeding are considered one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas production on our planet, so much so that some experts say that a steak would pollute more than a car.

The general sensitivity towards topics of this kind is fortunately increasing, Yesterday, April 22, Earth Day was celebrated all over the world. This date may have been symbolically chosen by several people to initiate their individual change, deciding to opt for a 'vegetarian or vegan food, for the good of our planet. It is an ethical choice that appears increasingly fundamental to save ourselves and the Earth we inhabit, together with the living beings that populate it.

ENPA wanted to be the spokesperson for this message, underlining how renounce at first to the meat can preserve the planet from the loss of biodiversity, desertification and pollution deriving from the excessive industrialization of the food sector. In the opinion of the economist Jeremy Rifkin, a vegetarian revolution it is absolutely necessary to save the world, coupled with a better distribution of food resources. Currently only 20% of the world population can feed themselves adequately, according to data collected by the FAO.

If the fields cultivated with fodder destined for farm animals were dedicated to human nutrition, the situation would certainly be different, not to mention how, in order to obtain the necessary resources for the breeding of meat animals, deforestation of areas of exceptional natural wealth, such as Amazon rainforest, depriving the Earth of the green lungs that allow it to survive with greater balance. It takes 16 kg of forage and 12 to 15 liters of water to produce 1 kg of meat. According to the FAO, if these resources were redistributed and used for the production of cereals and legumes (whose proteins can optimally replace the animal ones in our diet) the problem of Hunger in the world would be solved.

To induce us to reflect on the interconnection between food choices and the well-being of the planet, the WWF also intervenes, with a new portal dedicated to conscious consumption at the table, within which recipes and advice in the name of sustainability will be published and the implementation of good practices will be investigated by those who have opted for a green style in the kitchen and at the time of dedicating themselves to shopping.

"Let's not 'eat' the Planet, add a link to the table“Is the promotional slogan of the initiative promoted by the WWF and called“ One Planet, One Food ”. Through the site it will be possible to calculate thecarbon footprint of the foods that we commonly consume, in order to orient us towards more sustainable choices, which may concern, among other things, self-production, the preference for food at zero kilometers and produced through the methods used byorganic and biodynamic agriculture, in full respect of ecosystems, with particular attention to avoiding waste of precious resources and renouncing the use of those poisons that can only partially reach our dishes: pesticides. So let's not forget that eating can turn from necessity and habit into a real one ecological act for which the Planet will thank us.
