Glyphosate in German beers. The Munich Institute for the Environment conducted tests on 14 beer brands most popular in Germany and identified residues of glyphosate, a herbicide widely used in agriculture that the WHO has recently included among the substances probably carcinogenic to humans.

The levels of glyphosate found in beers were far higher than the allowed limit by law, which is 0,1 micrograms. The analyzes in fact recorded glyphosate levels in beer ranging between 0,46 and 29,74 micrograms.

The glyphosate present in beer constitutes a health risk? We are not surprised that the Union of German Brewers immediately went on the defensive. The problem mainly concerns the now excessively widespread use of glyphosate in agriculture and probably also the lack of careful enough controls on the raw materials used for the production of beer.

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bfr), glyphosate does not pose a health risk to consumers. The scientific world is currently divided on glyphosate, with WHO which considers it a probable human carcinogen, while l'Efsa has recently denied the dangerousness of this substance (it is feared, however, that the EFSA opinion on glyphosate is not completely transparent).

With regard to glyphosate, it is really urgent to clarify, given that the moment is approaching when the European Commission will have to decide whether to renew its authorization for Europe for the next 15 years. The current authorization is expected to expire on 30 June 2016.

The beers analyzed in Germany belong to 14 brands Noti: Erdinger, Augustiner, Franziskaner, König Pilsener, Jever, Beck's, Paulaner, Warsteiner, Krombacher, Oettinger, Bitburger, Veltins, Hasseroeder e Radeberger.

Second the Munich Institute for the Environment la danger of glyphosate it should not be underestimated, while in the opinion of the Bfr, a person should drink 1000 liters of beer a day to ingest a quantity of glyphosate that is dangerous to health. According to Bfr the presence of glyphosate in beer may still be plausible, given that glyphosate is a substance allowed in the cultivation of cereals and that at the base of the production of beer we find a cereal such as barley, from which the malt is obtained.

The fact remains that traces of glyphosate have been found to be present in numerous German beers in higher than normal quantities and the phenomenon is still to be explained. Glyphosate is the chemical behind Monsanto's Roundup herbicide. According to the Union of German Brewers, the levels of glyphosate found are not credible.

At the center of the story we find once again the need to defend the rights of consumers. According to the Union of German Growers, the presence of glyphosate in beers could be explained by the import of barley malt from abroad. Barley grown in Germany for malt production, on the other hand, would always be subjected to rigorous controls.

Would you like a pint of glyphosate-flavored beer? Those who love beer can always choose if they want organic and local craft beers.
