Glyphosate: 85% of tampons contain traces of the pesticide

Glyphosate even in tampons, wipes and sterile gauze. The most widely used Monsanto herbicide in the world was found in 85% of tampons tested in a study conducted by researchers at the University of La Plata in Argentina. 62% of the samples also tested positive for AMPA (or aminomethylphosphonic acid), a derivative of glyphosate.

Even glyphosate in tampons, in sterile wipes and gauze. The most widely used Monsanto herbicide in the world was found in 85% of tampons tested in a study conducted by researchers at the University of La Plata in Argentina. 62% of the samples also tested positive for AMPA (or aminomethylphosphonic acid), a derivative of glyphosate.

"85% of all samples tested positive for glyphosate and 62% for AMPA, which is the environmental metabolite, but in the case of cotton and sterile gauze the percentage was 100%," says Dr. . Damian Marino, lead researcher of the study.

Glyphosate invades the world, the herbicide considered potentially carcinogenic and which has been under discussion for some time due to the possible risks associated with infertility, is also found in absorbent tampons and sterile gauze pads. To establish it is Damian Marino of the Argentine University of La Plata together with his team.

According to Medardo Avila Vazquez, president of the third national congress of doctors held in Buenos Aires (National Congress of Doctors for Fumigated Communities):

"The results of this research are very serious and worrying, if you use cotton or medical gauze on wounds or for personal hygiene, they are thought to be sterile products, and instead are contaminated with carcinogenic substances".

But why is there glyphosate in products that are supposed to guarantee us maximum safety?

“Most of the world's cotton production takes place on genetically modified plantations, with seeds and plants resistant to glyphosate. The cotton is sprayed when the capsule is open and the glyphosate penetrates directly into the fibers ”.

Glyphosate is the key ingredient of biotech giant Monsanto's Roundup, US soybean and corn crops have been genetically engineered to resist herbicide application. It is estimated that between 1992 and 2012 2,6 billion kilos of herbicide were sprayed.

The objective of this research was not aimed at establishing the presence of glyphosate, but at verifying the range of action of the aerial spraying that occurs in the plantations, so the discovery was seen in an alarming way.

So while Monsanto advocates the safety of its product, we are increasingly talking about contaminated products. A 2013 report by Women's Voices for the Earth illustrated how the women's products industry contains unregulated and potentially harmful chemicals, including preservatives, pesticides, perfumes and dyes.

Unfortunately, therefore, in addition to pasta, beer and many products we eat every day, glyphosate is also found in those intimate products that should guarantee us safety. luckily there are alternatives: biological tampons or menstrual cups.
