At the first injured horse, Oracle force of the Rione del Grifone, the veterinarian of the Fitetrec-Ante commission found the open fracture of the first phalanx, trauma that led him to give the horse a general anesthesia and to execute its suppression for compassionate reasons.
The second horse, Golden Storming del Rione del Drago (pictured above), presented a open epiphyseal fracture of the radius. The veterinary commission, which was able to take care of the animal only after completing the operations on the first injured horse due to the jury's failure to stop the competition, also carried out the suppression under general anesthesia. Both the bodies of the horses were seized and are currently stored in a cold room available to the magistrate, who can arrange for an autopsy.
LAV announces legal action, for give justice to these new victims of one of the many manifestations that still insist on connecting to the concept of culture, history and tradition, but which instead are often the theater of death.
“We will file a complaint and evaluate all possible legal actions for them to come ascertain any responsibility for the organization of the carousel and the authorizations granted. Too many horses are sent to die in these 'shows' which instead should be abolished throughout the national territory, as a legacy of the past, without any current logic, totally anachronistic and in contrast with the increasingly widespread feeling of respect for animals - declares Nadia Zurlo, head of the Equidae sector LAV - Civil society and institutions must commit themselves to banning these bloody demonstrations forever ".
Meanwhile, the mayor Samuele Bertinelli requested all the technical reports on the track, on the visits to the horses and on the veterinary treatments carried out following the two injuries, which he handed over to the judicial authority. And he asks the entire city council and all of his city to seriously reflect on the incident, indicating the need for do not play next year's edition in the meantime.
The Giostra dell'Orso is an event organized by the Giostra dell'Orso city committee according to the regulations governing its relations with the Administration. It was born in 1947, resumed in 1975, after many years of interruption, and has developed since then until today, with only two breaks in 1986 and 1991. This year was the fortieth edition.
But the very serious injuries to the two horses, reads a note, "have shown - unfortunately - how the many, important, new guarantees introduced to regulate the event for greater protection of horses and jockeys were not sufficient to guarantee safety. some horses. Since this Administration has always reiterated that the priority and essential element for the continuation of the Joust could only be that of the safety of men and animals, the mayor thinks that a Carousel of the Bear can never be run again with the methods used up to now. The evening demonstration on the day of San Jacopo will have to be radically rethought and the Administration will immediately dedicate itself to this work, to which all the necessary time will have to be dedicated ”.
What can we do in the meantime? Say no to these anachronistic manifestations. The only way to protect horses is to abolish these barbarities, we are no longer in the Middle Ages. Also because, as Nadia Zurlo explains, alternatives exist, as demonstrated by the hilarious and ethical "Cursa dei cavai" of Lodi, where horses are toys on wheels.
