Geranium: its root blocks the HIV virus

An extract of geranium roots has been shown to inactivate the HIV virus, preventing it from spreading

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

They decorate our balconies and terraces, they are colorful, fragrant, very resistant and therefore particularly recommended even for those who do not exactly have a green thumb. Let's talk about geraniums that today are back in the limelight thanks to new research that has shown how these flowers manage to be a valuable aid in the fight against AIDS (HIV).

In particular, according to the research carried out in Germany byHelmholtz Zentrum Institute and published on Plos One, to be valuable for inactivating the AIDS virus (specifically HIV -1, the most widespread) would be the root of Pelargonium sidoides, or rather of the geranium which, from experiments in test tubes, has managed to prevent infection, by inactivating the virus and blocking its reproduction and spread in the cells of the blood and immune system.

The extract obtained from the roots of geranium owes its potential to a mix of polyphenols and it is safe for humans to the point that it is already used in herbal medicine. Now all that remains is to exploit this new discovery to try to create a future drug that can stem this virus that still continues to affect many people around the world. From the latest estimates of the World Health Organization, they would be over 35 million people with HIV, which remains among the top 10 causes of death.

What is promising in this new discovery is the fact that the mechanism of action by which the geranium extract works is different from that of the drugs currently in use to stem AIDS, the antiretrovirals. The potential is therefore there, all that remains is to understand better how to exploit it!
