    The study was conducted under the guidance of the researcher Tim Holm Jakobsen, who dealt with it in view of the discussion of his doctoral thesis. Research has confirmed that garlic contains a chemical compound capable of neutralizing resistant bacteria by paralyzing their communication system.

    As the researcher pointed out, the ajoene contained in garlic prevents bacteria from producing a particular one toxin capable of destroying i White blood cells present in the body. White blood cells are indispensable, as they play a crucial role in the functioning of the immune system, not only protecting us from infection, but also killing the bacteria themselves.

    According to the University of Copenhagen, the aggressive infections and multi-resistant are an increasingly serious problem around the world. Bacteria are developing drug resistance at an alarming rate. For this reason it is urgent to find new solutions to the problem.

    Bacteria can resist antibiotics by coating themselves with a biofilm, a sort of film composed of organic substances, which defends them from the action of medicines. Experts have turned their attention especially to the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes infections in patients with chronic leg ulcers and in those with cystic fibrosis.



    As Jakobsen himself explains, ajoene is able to support and improve treatments based on conventional antibiotics. It is precisely from the combination of these two elements that the researcher was able to draw positive results for his study. From a technical point of view, ajoene works by blocking the communication system of bacteria (known as Quorum Sensing), which is used for various purposes, including creating infections.

    To get the desired results, it would be necessary to eat approx 50 heads of garlic per day, as communicated by the researcher. This is obviously an impossible goal. This is due to the reduced presence of ajoene inside the garlic. Therefore the experts will work to reproduce in the laboratory this natural substance that could be really useful in fighting bacterial infections. And it is precisely nature, according to the conclusions of the researchers themselves, that represents a fundamental starting point.
