How to deal with the student housing shortage in Johannesburg, in South Africa? This question was answered by the designers of Citiq Property, ushering in a new era of innovative super-efficient apartments made from abandoned materials that come back to life. Like the container.

In fact, 4 floors of accommodation were created in this way, obtained from colorful containers for the transport of emrci installed on two former grain silos, offering hundreds of quality local college students to live in, and at reasonable prices. According to official data, in fact, about half of South African university students leave school without a diploma. Citiq hopes to reduce this number by providing them with a safe, comfortable and economical accommodation.

The Mill Junction Project, this is the name of the facility, can host up to 400 students. It features communal kitchens, free wifi, study areas, a gym and several recreation rooms. From the roof, you have an incredible view over the city. It has been equipped with artificial grass and a gazebo, making it an inviting social space for young guests.

It is not just about an innovative urban design, but also something designed for the pockets. The Mill Junction offers a Low energy consumption thanks to a whole series of precautions, such as windows and doors with double glazing and lighting with motion sensors. These features could reduce energy consumption by 50 percent compared to a conventional building.

“By providing quality student accommodation in a good location, and building everything from the ground up, we can provide efficient infrastructure that they reduce the consumption of water and electricity and, consequently, the costs management of a student residence ", explains Paul Lapham, CEO at Citiq.

The reaction from the community was more than positive. Apartments seem to be selling like hot cakes. Perhaps also because the reuse of these structures provides a artistic and eclectic look, which appeals to people who want to establish their individuality. It is precisely this approach of alternative development to traditional construction methods with bricks and mortar to have guided the design of the container-apartments installed on the old silos.
