From leaves to recycled paper, how to make DIY confetti at no cost

We are entering the heart of the Carnival and, with the masks ready, we cannot forget the confetti. Have you ever thought of making them at home with your children and at zero cost? We present some simple ideas to create your confetti right away and have fun.

Confetti is generally made from colored, recycled paper and sold in plastic bags. Children enjoy throwing them but there is a huge waste of materials that are only used for a few minutes. The ideal is therefore to optimize resources and create your own confetti at home by recycling paper that you no longer use or other natural materials such as dry leaves and flower petals.

Recycled paper confetti

Surely at home you will have paper lying unused in some drawer: it can be that of old newspapers, magazines, flyers from supermarkets and shops, wrapping and gift paper or even scraps of cardboard, paper mache and sheets that are left over after some creative work. .

Well, collect everything you have in order to make a good amount of confetti. You will then only need one scissors, a washing machine, paper envelopes (also in this case you can recycle those of bread or fruit) and some free time.

To make the confetti you simply have to cut the various types of paper into strips about 2-3 cm wide, then overlap some of them and finally use the hole punch to make the classic round confetti. If you have then punchers capable of cutting out other shapes (among other things, there are punches just for confetti), welcome! Children will surely appreciate it.

Once ready, store the confetti in the paper bags ready to be thrown!

Confetti from dry leaves

A very original idea for making confetti is to use dry leaves. The children will therefore have a double task: first they will have to collect enough leaves around the parks and streets and then take them home and pierce them in order to make the confetti.

The different colored leaves will ensure a very particular chromatic variety to the Carnival confetti. Also in this case the leaves must be pierced and you can choose the most disparate shapes (just have the appropriate molds that they cut out): hearts, butterflies, stars, etc.

Confetti from flower petals

If you have flowers that someone has given you that are about to wilt, you can use them to make confetti. First, collect the petals, place them on a tray or plate and let them dry on a sunny windowsill.

If you are short on time or the sky is cloudy that day, you can dry them in the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, place the petals on top and dry for about 10 minutes at 180 °, until they are dry and crunchy.

You can then crumble them a little, pierce them or use them as they are (also depends on the size of the petals). Finally, place them in paper bags.
