A space regenerated and given back to the city in a new guise, but also a Urban garden where bees and pollinating insects will be the protagonists. We are talking about the abandoned factory of Mirafiori in Turin where agricultural machinery was built in the XNUMXs, but which has long since become a reference point for the neighborhood.

After decades of neglect, the post-industrial area lives in a new light: soils regenerated from an environmental point of view with an eye to sustainability thanks to the use of organic waste compost and microorganisms. Now, after the dispute with the Municipality and the dismantling of the agricultural market, Mirafiori is reborn thanks to the Orto wow project financed by the European Community as part of PrpGIreg, a program that aims to regenerate post-industrial areas in both Europe and China.

The first works have already begun. IS OrtiAlti to take care of it, providing both an urban garden with melliferous plants, able to attract bees and other pollinating insects, and with a green roof on the structure. Everything will be ready for Easter and once the structure has been arranged, the Mirafiori Foundation will make a call to identify associations and groups, twenty in all, who will manage the urban garden.

Pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, but not only, are essential for a healthy and functioning ecosystem. To make urban areas more compatible with pollinators, cities should reduce the use of pesticides, increase the size of green spaces and the diversity of plant species.
"Green corridors also help prevent the isolated growth of insect populations, which can lead to species extinction," ProGIreg writes on its website.
The re-baptized garden ‘pollinator garden’ it includes both the cultivation of vegetables and, as we said, of honey plants. For this reason, next to the caissons there will be hives and the consequent production of zero kilometer honey.

A good initiative especially in a historical moment in which bees and pollinating insects are struggling to colonize new territories and reproduce in new areas due to pesticides and wild changes.
