Within minutes the sky was completely darkened and thousands of people fled their homes in the villages and fled to escape the powerful eruption, which also destroyed a road and a bridge near the city of Malang. 





    At the moment the toll is one dead and at least 40 injured, seriously burned according to what is reported by the local authorities, but a massacre is feared.

    Mount Semeru experienced an increase in volcanic activity as indicated by the occurrence of hot cloud avalanches leading to Besuk Kobokan, Sapitarang Village, Pronojiwo District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, on Saturday (4/12) at 15.20 WIB. The chronology of events observed from the Volcano Observation Post (PPGA) Mount Semeru at Gunung Sawur Post, Poncosumo Hamlet, Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District, vibrations from lava floods or hot cloud avalanches were recorded starting at 14.47 WIB with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters. The volcanic eruption of hot clouds is very clearly observed leading to Besuk Kobokan and smells of sulfur. In addition, visual reports from several locations also experienced darkness due to fog from volcanic ash. As a quick response to the occurrence of the hot cloud fall, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lumajang Regency has issued an appeal to the public and miners not to engage in activities in the area. along the Mujur Watershed (DAS) and Kobokan Bulk. Members of the Lumajang Regency BPBD along with other joint teams immediately headed to the scene of the incident in the Candipuro-Pronojiwo sector to carry out monitoring, rapid assessment, data collection, evacuation and other actions deemed necessary in handling the emergency.
