A new and original NHS experiment to urge people to lose weight and be more active

Wolverhampton is a small town in Great Britain where one third of people are classified as physically inactive. For this very reason, it was chosen as a test city for what health secretary Sajid Javid described as a new weight loss program, which includes free movie tickets, shopping vouchers and gym passes.

For the experiment all people will receive a fitness tracker linked to an app, which will encourage them to increase their step count and eat more fruits and vegetables.

The pilot project could be rolled out to the whole country if it proves to be successful. Wolverhampton was chosen as a test town as a third of residents are physically inactive, and only 48,5% of adults in the city eat the five servings of fruit and vegetables a day compared to an average of 55,4% in England.

The idea came from an idea of Sir Keith Mills, the entrepreneur behind Air Miles and the Nectar loyalty program. Participants will be given devices worn on the wrist, which they generate personalized health recommendations, such as eating more vegetables and reducing daily portion sizes. Health technology company HeadUp Systems has won the contract, and will work with other companies to provide rewards including merchandise, discounts and gift cards.
