New Alert food. The Forestry Corps has kidnapped 85 tons of olive colored with copper sulfate. In total 19 people were reported.

This is the result of the operation "Olive Painted " carried out by the forestry during an extraordinary campaign of checks on green table olives. From the 66 checks and 39 samplings it emerged that large quantities of table olives were treated to encourage consumption.

Some manufacturers have used mainly two dyes of vegetable origin, E140 and E141, a basis of chlorophyll or his own derivatives rameici. These dyes, although non-toxic, are however banned from olives. An area that the police have been watching over for some time.

Il copper sulfate in the samples taken it was the doppio (70 mg / kg) compared to limits maximums established by law, equal to 30 mg / kg. In any case, this substance can only be used to treat some plants against certain diseases but certainly not for alter the color of the food to be brought to the table.

This was not the case. Manufacturers used the copper sulphate directly on the olives. This substance is bio-accumulating from the organism, this means that it persists in the organs and like all metals it is difficult to dispose of.

Why use copper sulphate? Lan answer is soon said. The "colored" olives had a much more captivating and uniform color. In this way it was possible to treat those of previous years, disposing of the stocks in the warehouse.

Now the perpetrators are accused of fraudulent use of unauthorized additives, sale of unhealthy foods as genuine, possession for trade, in a malicious way, of substances intended for food dangerous per la health public. There were also high administrative penalties for an amount of several thousand euros.

How to choose the best olives? The advice is not to focus on those that have an intense and uniform green color, because it could be artificial.

Better still to rely on a friend or trusted farmer.
