This year instead of buying new ones, recycle old Christmas balls revisiting them with creativity. They can be transformed into beautiful and trendy decorations, simply by adding a few touches of color.

While commonly used materials such as remnants of wool, and natural elements that you can easily recover during a walk in the woods, think of pine cones, lend themselves to the creation of balls from scratch. Here are many DIY ideas “Recycled” from which to draw inspiration.

Hand painted Christmas baubles

Nothing could be easier than recovering old balls with a slightly too dated style and repainting them. You need:

  • a brush
  • acrylic colors of your choice
  • old balls with a smooth surface (painted are fine as long as they are not glitter)
  • support container

Before buying acrylic colors, unless you already have them, choose a color palette in line with the subject you are going to represent.

Place the ball in the container so as to have a stable support base and draw the elements you want to represent on a sheet of paper.

Paint the ball with the dye that will be the base and once it is dry, add the various elements. Don't worry if the background is dark, good quality acrylics are opaque so they shouldn't give you a problem.

Otherwise you can always draw the various elements on the unpainted ball and add the background at a later time, but be careful because it is a painstaking work that makes you waste much more time.

As for the decorations, you can really wander with the imagination, going from natural twigs to dashes, from animals to geometries.

Remember to apply a last coat of clear protective to make the decorations last over time.

DIY Christmas baubles with recycled wool

Making DIY pom poms with recycled wool is simple and here we explain how to do it using different methods.

Once ready, you can hang them on the tree instead of the classic balls.

DIY Christmas baubles from paper and recycled cardboard

With simple paper you can make nice DIY Christmas balls. Here you can find the Lollyrot tutorial that explains how to make them starting from paper circles.

Or you can take a cue from the tutorial by By Stephanie Lynn and make the balls with strips of recycled paper or cardboard.

The cardboard reindeer are also very nice.

Refined and original the ornaments proposed by Lia Griffith, who explains how to make them using colored paper, glue and thread.

DIY Christmas baubles with pine cones

Pine cones can vaguely resemble Christmas baubles, and if you like natural elements, this year might be for you.

All you have to do is add a string to hang them from the branches of the Christmas tree and decorate them as you like, in a more natural or extravagant style.

By dipping them a little in white acrylic, the Christmas effect is guaranteed.

Or you can bet on gold, which makes them more elegant and precious.
