    Directed by Drew Xanthopoulos ("The Sensitives" and here also director of photography), Fathom follows two scientific teams that study the enigmatic songs of humpback whales, through the research of doctors Ellen Garland and Michelle Fournet, who are on opposite sides of the planet. traveling to discover the way of communicating whales.

    In a cove surrounded by Alaskan mountains, Fournet makes repeated attempts to talk to whales, playing them a meticulously reconstructed interpretation of a yelp she thinks might be a greeting. In French Polynesia, behavioral ecologist Ellen Garland of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland instead listens to the songs of humpback whales, mapping how they are modified, learned and shared among whales in the South Pacific.
