Farewell to Yupik, the polar bear who for 25 years lived in a concrete framed pool at the Benito Juarez Zoo in the city of Morelia, western Mexico with warm temperatures that contributed to his suffering. He lived in a real prison, treated like a freak.

Zoo staff on Facebook say they are saddened by the loss of Yupik who lived 25 of his 27 years locked up in the zoo amidst flashes and noises caused by visitors, yet for years he had always refused to move him to a more suitable facility that clearly could not no longer be the natural habitat.

Yupik, in fact, from Alaska had arrived when he was only a few months old, his mother had been killed and he, still a puppy, had entered his prison. As early as 2016, he had been experiencing health problems due to a too hot environment and confined spaces.

Activists had called for his relocation to a wildlife and biodiversity shelter in Yorkshire Wildlife Park, but when everything seems ready to ensure a better life for this hapless polar bear, the local government blocked everything. governor Silvano Aureoles who: “Michocan is Yupik's home and he must stay here. We adopted him when he was 3 months old and in these 26 years we have guaranteed his well-being with a team of specialists ".

Such well-being that in fact led to his death: Yupik didn't make it because of an aneurysm and a fractured aorta. But in the zoo's press release, it's all normal.

"An inevitable death caused by natural diseases of a very animal and Yupik lived longer than the average life span of his species in the wild, which normally reaches 15 to 18 years."

However, we cannot help but wonder when the environment in which he lived contributed to his malaise. We are talking about conditions of suffering for an animal accustomed to the cold and forced to gasp in a pool with inevitably warm water given the Mexican climate, narrow spaces and concrete under the paws.

Now Yupik is finally free even if, we would have hoped for another kind of freedom.
