Farewell to the rare pink flamingo sighted in Abruzzo

His presence had made the inhabitants of Sulmona rejoice but unfortunately the animal has just been found dead

It had been discovered just a few days ago. His presence had made the inhabitants of Sulmona rejoice, where he had been spotted in flight by Piercarlo Di Gianbattista who promptly reported him to the Abruzzese Ornithological Station. Unfortunately, the animal has just been found dead.

The animal, immortalized at a distance by Maria Elena Napoleoni, a young birdwatcher from the Abruzzese Ornithological Station, had remained for about a week to rewind the Raiano Quail in the calm waters of Lake, at least until yesterday when its body was found without life.

The bird, unmistakable due to its long legs and its typical pink color, was an adult. In our country it lives above all in Sardinia, in the Po delta and in the Margherita di Savoia salt pans but it is not a known and common species in the inland areas of Abruzzo where only rarely are some specimens observed and always along the coast.

Yet it had happened less than a week ago. The bird had remained for 6 days in the small body of water on the outskirts of the town of Raiano. Then on Friday Maria Elena Napoleoni noticed an anomalous behavior of the animal and yesterday morning she returned to the place. There she found the flamingo now dying. The attempts to save him were not worth much. The flamingo was dead.

"Following the recovery, the carcass will be investigated to ascertain the causes of death since flamingos, like other water birds, often ingest toxic substances present in the water or lead shot used in hunting cartridges that settle on the bottom of ponds and lagoons but nothing excludes the possibility of a death from natural causes. From the analysis of the photos, the ornithologists of the SOA believe that it is an adult specimen that should not have escaped to a breeder or zoo because it does not have a ring and its feathers are apparently in good condition ”explains the SOA.
