It is a lifelong condition, due to lesions of the central nervous system that prevent normal cognitive and motor development, causing mental retardation and physical disability.
The risk of cerebral palsy has in the past been linked todisruption of hormonal functions maternal during pregnancy and today a new study investigated the role of exposure to pesticides on such hormonal dysfunctions.
A group of researchers from the United States and Denmark carried out a research analyzing 3905 cases of cerebral palsy and 39.377 control cases.
The babies were born in California between 1998 and 2010 to mothers who lived within two kilometers of farms that used pesticides that could interfere with the endocrine system.

The results, recently published in the journal Toxics, showed that exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy a 23 pesticides of the 32 examined, it was associated with high risks of cerebral palsy in newborn girls.
Of the 23 pesticides mothers were exposed to, 15 would be able to affect estrogen and 7 would affect thyroid hormones.

The study therefore concluded that exposure to pesticides during the first three months of pregnancy, could interfere with the endocrine system of the mother and, consequently, hinder the neuromotor development of the fetus in a sex-specific way, with an increased risk of cerebral palsy in girls.
