Expensive bills: UK energy company recommends warming up with cats and dogs (then apologizes)

A well-known British energy company went into the storm for offering ridiculous advice to its customers for warming up

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

To save on bills, a well-known British energy company has sent its customers several tips, including pampering pets and eating ginger. But following the avalanche of controversy, she was forced to apologize

Electricity and gas bills are now skyrocketing across Europe. What to do to save a little? To help your customers cope with expensive bills Ovo Energy, Britain's third largest energy supplier, decided to send an email with a series of tips to follow. But because of this initiative, the company ended up in the center of a storm. The reason? In addition to recommending house cleaning, jumping, wearing heavy sweaters, avoiding alcohol, and eating ginger, Ovo Energy suggested pamper your pets (but also loved ones), thus using them as a source of heat.

Many customers initially thought this was a joke, but sadly it wasn't at all.

The controversy was triggered by an article in the Financial Times, which reported the story on which the Labor MP Darren Jones also intervened, calling this series of advice a mockery.

"Being told to wear a sweater instead of turning on the heat if you can't afford it, at a time of such difficulty for so many families, is clearly offensive," Jones told the British newspaper.

Harsh words also from Labor MP Clive Lewis:

“It's ridiculous and insulting. Advice is read by people who have to choose between eating and warming up. If this is the state of the country we are in now, I find it rather depressing ”.

The company's apologies

After being overwhelmed by criticism, the Ovo Energy company decided to back off and apologize for those advice, recognizing their uselessness.

We recently sent an email to customers with energy saving tips that pointed to a blog post "- with these words the company apologized through a tweet - We should never have written or sent them to customers: they were useless and embarrassing We are sincerely sorry.

You might have seen OVO & SSE in the news today. We recently sent an email to customers with energy saving tips that linked to a blog post. This blog should never have been written or sent to customers – it was embarrassingly unhelpful and poorly judged. We are sincerely sorry.

The energy company also made it known that it was looking for meaningful solutions to deal with the energy crisis. And, given the dark period that the British (and others) are experiencing due to the expensive bills, it is not really the case to make irony or give superficial and ridiculous advice to families struggling with a thousand difficulties.
