The sarcophagi containing the mummies were found during the Egyptian archaeological mission in progress in the south-eastern area of the pyramid of King Amenemhat II, in the necropolis of Dahshur. The mummies, in particular, are covered with a painted layer in the shape of a human being and belong to the late period (664-332 BC).
Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, explains that the mission began its excavation work in August and that the sarcophagi and mummies are kept in the Dahshur warehouse.
Their photos were presented to the museum's exhibition committee to be exhibited in the collection of new museums by the Ministry of Antiquities in Hurghada and Sharm El -Shekh, soon to open.
As National Geographic explains, the area of the pyramid of Pharaoh Amenemhat II over the centuries has been heavily looted to extract blocks of white limestone: therefore few artifacts remain available for analysis (and the pyramid itself has very little of its ancient splendor. ). This is why the discovery is so exceptional.
Among other things, it might also seem strange that the mummies, which archaeologists say belong to the Late Period, were found near a Middle Kingdom pyramid built about 1200 years earlier.
Sarah Parcak, Egyptologist and National Geographic explorer explained in this regard that the necropolis of Dahshur served as a cemetery for the elite of Memphis, which was the capital of Lower Egypt during the Ancient Kingdom (2700-2200 BC) and remained an important center. during the Middle Kingdom (2055-1790 BC).
Towards the end of the Late Period (664-332 BC), the expert continues, the capital had actually moved to the Nile Delta, but the area of Dahshur nevertheless remained an important center of worship, and therefore continued to be notables and people of high rank are buried.
