Every autumn equinox a snake-shaped shadow appears in this Mayan pyramid

Every year, on the occasion of the spring and autumn equinox, in the Mayan pyramid of Kukulkàn you can witness a surreal spectacle

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

The peninsula of Yucatan preserves the most fascinating archaeological sites of all: we are talking about the Chichén Itzá, the monumental Mayan complex counted among the seven wonders of the world. Here, on the occasion of the spring and autumn equinox, thousands of people flock from nearby cities and other states to witness an almost surreal event that occurs in the El Castillo pyramid and which has its roots in an ancient past: the descent of the god Kukulkàn, which literally means "feathered serpent". And also this year the magic will repeat itself shortly, or on 22 September, when we will say goodbye to summer.

In reality, the play of light and shadow is created by the sun, which gives life to an evocative optical illusion: a snake-shaped silhouette along the 91-step staircase of the pyramid, which descends to earth during the first light of dawn and then rise to the sky during sunset.

A surreal sight to see once in a lifetime

According to Mayan legend, in fact, twice a year the snake god visits the pyramid dedicated to him to get in touch with his worshipers and bring his blessings to ward off drought so that the harvest is good. But not only. Near this pyramid it is possible to experience a particular sound effect. When you are at his feet, clapping your hands makes you hear a sound similar to the singing of a quetzal, the bird sacred to the Maya. But there is a scientific explanation for this phenomenon as well: the researchers found that the structure favors a complex interplay of sounds and resonances.

The Pyramid of Kukulkàn, also known as El Castillo, is the center of Chich'en Itza and was built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization between the 1988th and XNUMXth centuries. In XNUMX the archaeological site was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. The descent of the god Kukulkàn represents a very important moment for the Mayan tradition, to be witnessed at least once in a lifetime. The event is artificially recreated during a light show projected on the pyramid.

The show, scheduled every evening from Tuesday to Sunday, lasts about half an hour and is accompanied by sounds and the story of the extraordinary Mayan civilization.
