Did you know that bats also engage in oral sex? Well yes, humans are not the only species to know those sexual acts that require the use of the mouth and tongue for erotic stimulation of the genitals. In addition to bonobo monkeys, known for their intense sexual activity including oral sex, genital massages and tongue kisses, bats are also used to practice both fellatio and cunnilingus at the time of mating.

This was already revealed by a study on short-nosed fruit bats (Cynopterus sphinx) by Min Tan, Gareth Jones, Guangjian Zhu, Jianping Ye, Tiyu Hong, Shanyi Zhou, Shuyi Zhang and Libiao Zhang, all winners of the 2010 IgNobel Prize for having discovered how fellatio was a routine behavior, suitable for prolong the duration of copulation. Now, however, new research, also published on PloS One, tells us that another species of bats also practice oral sex during reproduction, with males playing the role of "protagonists".

It is the Indian flying fox (Pteropus giganteus Brünnich), whose males practice oral sex on females, apparently always to make mating last longer. Scientists analyzed one colony of about 420 individuals, perched in a single fig tree in South India near the village of Nallachampatti. Over the course of more than 13 months, using binoculars and a video camera, the researchers witnessed 57 cases of oral sex, usually in the morning. "Bats seem to use oral sex as a courtship behavior," said Ganapathy Marimuthu, a researcher at Madurai Kamaraj University in India.

In fact, cunnilingus can help give away the foreplay and lubricate the females. Each oral intercourse lasted about 50 seconds. The males then mated with the females for about 10 to 20 seconds. And then they went back to cunnilingus again for 94-188 seconds. “It is possible that prolonged copulation allows for the sperm mobility, increasing the chances of conception “, concludes Marimuthu. But there is also another hypothesis: males could practice oral sex in order to remove the sperm of competitors, helping to ensure that their sperm fertilize the females.
