Biodegradable and non-toxic: have you ever thought of making the so-called "enzymatic detergent" at home? A detergent that takes its name from a specific process through which enzymes are developed, i.e. small protein molecules produced in plant and non-plant cells. But how do you make an enzymatic detergent with your own hands?

What not everyone knows is that this type of cleaner is suitable for many purposes and can be used on most surfaces, including metal, and fabrics.

These DIY and eco-friendly products contain enzymes and bacteria that break down organic matter, so - just like actual microorganisms - they are perfectly capable of removing stains and odors caused by sweat or blood, grass or urine and others. biological substances.

For a do-it-yourself enzymatic cleaner you just need to combine a few commonly used ingredients (the most efficient way to produce enzymes in large quantities is by using the yeast). Remember that you will have to let it ferment for at least a couple of weeks before using it.

Where can enzymatic detergent be used

Virtually everywhere. Enzymes act rapidly by biodegrading stains such as grease, oil or ink. More:

  • eliminates odors and has antibacterial power
  • stains the laundry
  • stains carpets and fabric upholstery
  • it is excellent in cleaning mattresses
  • sanitizes fruit and vegetables (a spoon for every liter of water)
  • it is an excellent natural repellent against ants, spiders and cockroaches

What is needed:

  • a clean two-liter bottle
  • 5 spoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (3 g) of active dry yeast
  • 1 liter of warm water
  • peel of 3 lemons or 3 oranges (but you can also mix, the important thing is that the peels are removed immediately and are not dry or deteriorated, because otherwise they would lose most of the oils useful for cleaning)

Procedure:

1. Combine all the ingredients, putting the peels first, then the sugar, yeast and water in the bottle
2. Screw the cap on and shake vigorously for a couple of minutes to dissolve the sugar. Then slowly unscrew the cap to reduce the pressure and close again. This process must be repeated at least three times a day for two weeks to prevent it from exploding.
3. After two weeks, you can unscrew and screw the cap back on once a day, because most of the sugar will have converted and less carbon dioxide will be produced (the yeast feeds on the sugar, which is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide)
4. Keep the bottle in a warm place (35 ° C) so that the mixture can ferment
5. Filter the mixture at the end of the two weeks, when the contents of the bottle have assumed an opaque color (it can however be left to ferment again, up to a maximum of three months, to obtain a very powerful detergent).
6. Transfer the cleaner to an airtight container

In this way, a good, effective and ecological detergent has been obtained, which can be used for many things in different quantities:

  • for floors: mix one part detergent and twenty parts water in another container
  • for bathroom, carpets, mattresses and kitchen surfaces: pour 120 ml into a clean spray bottle, add 1 liter of water, capped and shake
  • for encrustations, limescale accumulations and grease stains, the enzymatic detergent can be applied directly to the surface to be cleaned
  • for bathroom, kitchen and the most stubborn stains, if you need a powerful stain remover, add vinegar to your enzymatic detergent
  • for clothes, replacing washing machine detergent or adding a small amount to increase the washing effectiveness
