ENEA's “Energy Decalogue” to save energy that is good for your wallet and the environment

Electricity rises affect us all, but with these healthy habits we can save energy and money at the end of the month

On the occasion of the International Day dedicated to energy saving and to meet citizens weakened by expensive bills, ENEA has drawn up a guide with ten points dedicated to the efficient use of heating (Decalogue Heating). By following these small tricks, you can save up to 10% on your monthly bill - with some tips that are more advantageous than others: for example, installing LED bulbs allows you to save up to 85% more than traditional incandescent bulbs; the purchase of energy-saving appliances saves about 40%.

The stand-by lights of television and PC alone can lead to an energy expenditure that can reach up to 10% - he explains Nicolandrea Calabrese, Head of the ENEA Laboratory for Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Urban Development. - For this it is good to use special devices such as standby stops. But even more incisive actions are possible such as plant maintenance, property check-up (energy diagnosis), constant temperature control and regulation of the rooms up to more structural interventions to improve insulation. This is an intervention for which various incentives are provided that make it economically more sustainable.

But let's see in detail the ten tips of ENEA to put into practice immediately:

(Read also: Dear bills: 10 tips from Enea for intelligent energy consumption)

    1. Use energy-saving light bulbs. As we said, LED bulbs save energy as they produce up to five times more light than incandescent bulbs, for the same amount of energy consumed. Furthermore, an LED bulb lasts almost twice as long as a normal bulb (15.000 hours of light compared to 7.500 hours of an incandescent bulb): this also saves money when buying new bulbs.
    2. Improve the insulation of the house. Thermally insulating your apartment allows you to minimize heat loss and, therefore, to save when you turn on the heaters. The so-called "external insulation" can be achieved both outside and inside the apartment (in this case a loss of internal surface must be taken into account).
    3. Insulate roof and ceiling. In addition to external thermal insulation, ceiling insulation can also help to conserve heat inside the apartment - this translates into a saving of around 20% in the bill.
    4. Use double glazed windows. The thermal insulation of an apartment also involves replacing the old fixtures, which often lead to drafts and thermal bridges.
    5. Reduce the use of hot water. First of all, let's avoid running the boiler for a few moments - such as when we wash our hands or teeth: for these small activities we can safely use cold water and we will have saved some energy. Furthermore, we opt for a quick shower instead of the bathroom: in addition to consuming less energy, we will use about a quarter of the water needed to fill the tub; to further reduce water and energy consumption, remember to turn off the tap while we soap.
    6. Prefer electronic devices of higher energy class. More than half of the electricity consumption of a home (58%) is attributable to household appliances: it goes without saying, therefore, that investing in energy-saving appliances translates into a reduction in consumption and bill costs.
    7. Use multi-socket power strips. As we have explained, the stand-by lights are extremely expensive from the point of view of the energy they consume: just think that a small red light can consume up to 4 Watts per hour (or 96 Watts per day). This figure, multiplied by all the devices in stand-by in our home, translates into an exaggerated energy consumption. Why not connect several electronic devices to a multi-socket power strip, in order to permanently turn them off all together?
    8. Don't leave the light on unnecessarily. Obvious, but not too much: in the evening, we avoid leaving lights (and electronic equipment) on in the rooms from which we have left; during the day, we try to make the most of the sunlight that enters through the windows, perhaps moving to the brighter rooms to study or work.
    9. Building renewable energy generation plants. Producing your own electricity using renewable sources such as sun, wind and water is a great way to be completely independent from external supplies. If we have the possibility, we install a photovoltaic system on the roof of the house; alternatively, ENEA suggests the installation of a vertical mini-wind turbine on the roof for the production of electricity.
    10. Carry out maintenance of the systems. It is the number one rule in terms of safety, savings and attention to the environment: a system consumes less (and pollutes less) when it is correctly adjusted, with clean filters and without limescale deposits.
