Eisenhower Matrix: the 4 steps to manage priorities based on importance and urgency

Discovering the "Eisenhower Matrix", a system that teaches how to manage priorities based on how urgent or important they are

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Named after Dwight D. Eisenhower, president of the United States of America in the 50s, the effective time and priority management system known as Eisenhower matrix.

What's it about? It is a method of optimizing time by dividing the various tasks according to two main variables, namely urgency and importance. Widely used in the professional field as it is particularly efficient.

Eisenhower matrix: what it is and how it works

The Eisenhower matrix, represented by a table divided into four "quadrants", helps to better manage time both personally and professionally. And it is often used to organize work given its high potential for efficiency.

How does it work? The tasks to be performed must be ordered according to the degree of importance and urgency, terms that are not to be understood as synonyms.

  • Le urgent things they are those that require immediate attention, objectively priority;
  • Le Important things they are the decisive ones to achieve one's objectives, which are not negligible, but at the same time less "urgent" than the first in terms of time.

Once this subdivision has been made, the tasks must be entered in one of the four quadrants and carried out in order of priority.

First make a list of your tasks and ask yourself if they are urgent, not urgent, important or not important.

Then create a matrix and enter each activity in the most appropriate quadrant.

Once this subdivision has been made, the tasks must be entered in the corresponding quadrant and carried out accordingly. The quadrants, as we said, are 4 in all:

  • Quadrant 1 for important and urgent tasks that go then performed immediately
  • Quadrant 2 for important but not urgent tasks which can be programmed and executed quickly
  • Quadrant 3 for urgent but less important tasks ranging trust someone able to do them quickly
  • Quadrant 4 for non-urgent or important tasks which can be neglected if not completely eliminated

You can do it daily or every week or even monthly, depending on your needs. And don't forget that it is useful for all kinds of activities, both at work and to manage time optimally in the personal sphere.
