Ecolabel: what developments?Established in 1992, it is aimed at promote the conscious choice of those products defined as "high environmental performance" (such as biodiversity, energy consumption, impacts on climate change, emissions of hazardous substances, waste generation). On 27 February the European Parliament adopted a report on the agriculture committee development of organic agriculture - whose European market has an annual increase of 30% - and, thanks to the collaboration of the European Union Committee for Ecolabel (CUEME), a regulation has been adopted aimed at updating and at the same time simplifying the provisions on brand itself, i.e. establishing specific criteria for all product groups e facilitating the procedure for requesting and awarding the Ecolabel. The EP also calls for an improvement in the control systems of the member countries to allow traceability of the supply chain throughout the production cycle; operators from third countries will also have to obtain a sort of 'pass' from an EU authority.
The organic choice of Europe had already materialized in 2004, when the European Commission presented a document entitled "European action plan for organic agriculture and food". In 2007 the EP proposed that organic products be completely "GMO free", also lowering the threshold of accidental contamination; moreover it had established that the same community logo should be used only for those products composed of at least 95% biological substances. Now, as the new electoral deadline (6-7 June 2009), organic farming has been recognized as one of the key themes of the upcoming elections, as can be seen by accessing the site created specifically for the event. The Directorate General of Agriculture and Rural Development itself has created a space entirely dedicated to organic agriculture. “If the organic sector is to continue to grow - writes Mariann Fischer Boel, commissioner for agriculture, in the presentation of the site - potential consumers and the general public must understand why this sector is different, and how it works. Only then will they be able to have confidence in organic products, their cultivation methods and the EU organic logo ".
