Today we want to present you a project that combines art, design and ecology: we are talking about the Chairkit than the British artist and designer Civic Dan presented to London Design Festival last September. The Chairkit is a limited edition series of high quality chairs and tables that are sold in a practical assembly kit.

What we will need to be able to assemble them is a little good will and some tools: in this way we too will be able to build our chair or our coffee table.

Through a single object we could enjoy multiple experiences: one interactive, one creative and one fun. Each kit is sold with numbered and autographed print with assembly instructions: All you have to do is follow the simple instructions and in no time you will be seated in your new one ready to design.

But how did designer Dan Civico come up with this idea? “During this last period of very strong recession, I started planning a chair that could be of excellent quality while keeping production costs low, in order to be able to market it at a lower figure than 100 pounds. I experimented with a construction process that combined industrial and artisanal methodologies together, combining materials such as birch with inserts of solid wood such as walnut and oak. But despite the efforts made the chair was marketed for 120 pounds but within a short time all the prototypes were sold. I was still not satisfied with the result achieved and I thought that it was necessary to work more, especially in the cutting phase to optimize the waste of material. It was precisely at this stage that, seeing the profiles of the scraps after cutting in the workshop, I realized that they were, in shape and proportions, very similar to those of the chair. It was at that moment that I got the idea and back in my studio I designed it first version of the Chairkit. "
