Halfway between a country house and the house of a hobbit. Here is the new high residence energy efficiency built by the two owners of a Californian farm. The building itself is part of their business and has become its center. It is not in fact a simple refuge, but a very large structure, a real country farmhouse revisited.

Nigel and Lorraine Walker, owners of Eatwell Farm, brought it to life in California with a DIY construction kit purchased from Formworks Building, a Colorado-based company specializing in energy-efficient homes. They were thus able to build the house they dreamed of with their own hands.

The underground houses, or "Earth Houses“, They are quite common in the hilly area of Northern California, but they are quite rare in the lowlands. The house is located largely underground and is covered by one thick vegetation which allows to maintain pleasant and constant temperatures both in summer and in winter, with a significant energy saving.

Its realization would not have happened without the support of the kit di Formworks Building, which was designed so that anyone can build their own underground home anywhere in the world. As the company explains, these particular homes are much more energy efficient and more resistant compared to ordinary houses.

The main feature of the house is the green roof. The vegetation was sown after completing the work on the roof. In the meantime, the works to refurbish the interior spaces have been completed. The owners of the house were able to customize it to their liking, deciding the structure, the number of rooms, the position of the doors and windows. The house is equipped with a real industrial kitchen.

The roof was covered with a very thick layer of soil. Its structure is so resistant that it is possible to walk on it without problems. Wild flowers and tall grass were chosen for the roof covering. One was built in the center of the roof of the house transparent dome that emerges among the grass and allows to guarantee the natural light necessary to live inside it.
