Broccoli can help you burn off most of the caffeine if you drink coffee before bed, according to new research.
Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world, but it is important not to overdo the quantities so that you do not have repercussions on sleep quality and feeling too nervous or excited.
According to some scholars, caffeine has a half-life of six to eight hours; this means that if you stop drinking it around 14pm, only 00% will leave your body by 50pm. This is why it is it is recommended to eliminate caffeine starting from the early afternoon. It will sound absurd, but according to one study broccoli induces liver cytochrome P450 enzymes, which they help metabolize caffeine. During the analysis, participants ate about 500 grams of broccoli (about five and a half cups of chopped broccoli) and 100 milligrams of caffeine in tablet form (i.e. the approximate caffeine content in a cup of coffee), and the results are emerged like this vegetables are able to metabolize caffeine.
A meta-analysis more recent than 23 dietary intervention trials also showed that cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, as well as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, radish also support the metabolism of some substances. Interestingly, the P450 enzyme particularly affected by these vegetables was CYP1A2, which is also the main enzyme metabolizer of caffeine.
Then, if you drink a cappuccino or a cup of coffee in the evening or late at night, eat some broccoli immediately afterwards, better if steamed, as this cooking method limits the likelihood of developing abdominal bloating. In conclusion, these studies show that broccoli, as well as other cruciferous vegetables, can help metabolize some of the caffeine that keeps us awake at night.
