Earphones e headphones per children: are they really sure? Those who have brats or novice teenagers at home may find themselves among their junk (also) of hearing devices straight in the ears music or the talk of a film.

Often it says on the packaging "safe for young ears" or "100% safe listening", but in reality half of the earphones and headphones do not limit the volume. Indeed, in some cases they would produce sounds so loud as to be dangerous for the ears of the little ones.

It is the result of an analysis conducted by The Wirecutter website of the New York Times, which deals with products for consumers and which found that half of the 30 sets of children's headphones tested did not reduce the volume to the guaranteed limit. The worst headphones produce such loud sound that it could be dangerous to your ears in just a few minutes.

In the survey, 30 types of headphones and earphones were tested with one song and with pink noise, used to test the appliances, to see if they limited the volume to 85 decibels, which is the limit set for adult jobs for no more than 8 hours in the United States. By putting the song for 21 seconds at the maximum volume of 114 decibels, half of the headphones did not reduce the volume to 85 decibels.

With the pink noise, more than half of the headphones exceeded the limit. The study also tested the ability of the headphones to reduce the environmental noise and only 4 out of 30 headsets tested were found to be able to do this. To all the others, therefore, a negative vote because if there is no possibility to eliminate the ambient noise, there is a tendency to increase the volume and, consequently, to endanger the ears.

In any case, even with earphones actually limiting the maximum volume, supervision of the older ones is always necessary. "85 decibels is not a magical threshold under which one is safe and above which the ears bleed," explains Brian Fligor, audiologist with the World Health Organization.

The advice of the experts is then to keep the volume of our children at least 60%, so that they can hear if you ask them a question, and stop listening with headphones every hour.
